Troubleshooting

Barry doesn’t show any apps

Make sure you’ve granted Barry the required accessibility permission:

  1. Open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility
  2. Find Barry in the list and toggle it on
  3. Restart Barry

macOS asked Barry for “recording” / audio capture access

That prompt is required by macOS for the CoreAudio API Barry uses to read each app’s audio in real time. Click Allow — Barry never records, writes, or transmits audio. See the FAQ for the full explanation.

If you accidentally denied it, you can re-enable it under System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and toggle Barry on, then relaunch Barry.

A dot appeared next to my Control Center icon

That’s the macOS 15 system-wide indicator for any app currently capturing audio. Because Barry’s engine taps each app’s audio to adjust its volume, the dot stays on while Barry is running. It is expected behavior and not specific to Barry. See the FAQ for details.

Barry doesn’t appear in the menu bar

Barry lives in the top menu bar (next to the clock), not in the Dock. If you don’t see the icon, make sure Barry is running by checking Activity Monitor, or relaunch it from Applications. On Macs with a notch, the icon may be hidden behind the notch if you have many menu bar apps.
